No drugs to treat ‘dangerous’ malaria, diarrhea in Unity

There are no enough drugs to treat ‘dangerous cases of malaria and diarrhea’ among children in Unity State, an official has said.

Peter Makuoth Malual, Minister of Information, says more than 200 malaria cases are reported to the main hospital daily in Bentiu.

The International Committee of the Red Cross and the medical charity, MSF, evacuated their staff from parts of the state early this month due to security concerns.

Mr Malual told Eye Radio that most of the NGOs that are still operating in the state have limited capacity.

“Health conditions are still deteriorating. Bentiu [health facility] is not working well because most of its equipment got lost during the crisis,” Mr Malual said.

However, the minister could not confirm the death rate for both malaria and diarrhea.

Early this month, the UNOCHA said partners supplied what it calls live saving assistants to parts of the state. But aid workers were forced to relocate from some areas due to insecurity.
