‘Domino game leaves IDP dead in Juba’

A fighting at the UNMISS Camp in Juba has left one person dead and scores injured.

Eyewitnesses say the fighting flared up when two individuals who were playing dominos engaged in a fistfight after a misunderstanding at the camp near Jebel Kujur.

Later on, families armed with machetes and spears got involved in the scuffle. It’s unclear how the unnamed victim died.

“Most of the wounded are young people,” said an eyewitness.

Hundreds of people have been forced to flee the camp in fear of further attack.

Some IDPs say the UN failed to protect the IDPs during the melee.  They say peacekeepers present at the time ‘just watched’.

Eye Radio’s efforts to reach UNIMSS for comment were unsuccessful.

However, in a statement, the UN mission said it “took immediate measures, including deploying additional security elements to affected areas within the POC site, and along the perimeters of the UN House compound”.

A similar incident occurred in the same camp last year. Fighting broke out between Haak and Bul communities after a 17-year old girl from the Haak clan was impregnated by a boy from Bul community.

Over 10 people sustained serious injuries in the clashes.
