US ‘deeply concerned’ by the 60-day deadline failure

The US Secretary of State has condemned the government and the SPLM in Opposition for failing to agree on a transitional government within sixty days.

The deadline President Salva Kiir and Dr Riek Machar had agreed upon to discuss the transitional government ended on Sunday.

US Secretary of State John Kerry says the two parties should end the circle of missing deadlines.

In a statement released by the state department, John Kery says ‘innocent people keep dying as deadlines pass’.

He said the two parties are not engaging seriously in the peace talks.

“The failure to reach a peace deal is an insult to the people of South Sudan,” said Mr Kerry.

The statement also condemns the attack on Maban, in which six humanitarian workers were killed last week.

John Kerry called on IGAD and the African Union to immediately take appropriate action to bring peace to the people of South Sudan.
