About 11 cattle rustlers from Cueibet County in Lakes State turned their guns on one another and fought leaving two men dead in dispute over the distribution of stolen cattle, police said.
The criminals raided the 52 cattle belonging to a local army commander in Rumbek Center before they disagreed over ownership of one prestigious bull, according to Lakes police spokesperson, Maj. Elijah Mabor Makuac.
“During their clashes, one was killed among them and again they clashed at 5:00 PM and another one person was shot wounded, and later he also succumbed,” Makuac narrated.
“The criminals are still at large with the cattle and the security forces are also pursuing them. According to reliable information, we were told they are more than 11 people. The herd of cattle were not recovered.”
He said the raiders engaged in a series of armed clashes from noon to 5pm and tension remains high in an area hardly accessible to the security forces.
“Because they have moved to far village known as Kebi, and this area is far away and it is at the side of Agangrial village. It is within the territory of Cueibet County but there is no way to go up to that location.”
The police official further said the general security situation is calm and normal except some isolated incidences.
He described the cattle rustlers as notorious culprits comprising the most wanted criminals in the state who have previously committed crimes of murders and raiding without punishment.
On her part, civil society activist Angelina Adhel called on the state government to intervene by arresting the perpetrators and restoring communal peace.
“Let the culprits be brought to book. Let them be traced from everywhere they are because I am sure they are from the community that’s known, they are coming from the community where the leaders are also there.”
