The Interim Chairperson of the peace monitoring body – RJMEC, is calling on the unity government to clear the arrears of the ceasefire monitors CTSAM-VM, for them to resume work.
This comes after members of the Ceasefire and Transitional Security arrangement Monitoring and Verification have laid down their tools over unpaid arrears.
Charles Tai Gituai, the chairperson of R-JMEC (Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission), says the ceasefire monitors and members of all agreement mechanisms went on strike 10 months ago.
They are demanding the unity government clear and pay 10-month allowances and arrears.
“With regards to the CTSAM-VM, it is disappointing that its monitoring and verification teams are unable to operate as per their mandates due to non-payment of 10 months’ allowances of national monitors, which has led to their boycott,” Gituai said.
“CTSAM-VM plays an instrumental role in monitoring and reporting o compliance and violations of the permanent ceasefire and transitional security arrangements,” he added.
It is said that the ceasefire monitors are unable to conduct their duties as a result of the lack of payment.
Speaking during the 27th RJMEC Plenary Meeting, Interim Chairman Charles appeals to the government to immediately clear the arrears.
He requested the R-ToNU to provide funds for payment to national monitors and the national member of all agreement mechanisms.
