A Court Acquits Former Wau Commissioner Peter Miskin of December Protests Charges

The former commissioner of Wau County, John Peter Miskin who was accused of involvement in the Wau deadly protests has been released.

In December, the state authorities arrested Mister Miskin on ten charges which included; criminal acts, administrative, misappropriation of public funds, refusal to hand over the government car after resigning and misleading the public over the government plans to relocate the County headquarter to Bagari Payam.

In March, nine charges were dismissed by the court, but it accused Miskin of being responsible for instigating and inciting youth to intensify violence that killed 24 people in Wau.

However, a special court this morning acquitted Peter Miskin of all charges and ordered for his immediate release.

“…..the evidences brought against him were not enough to prove him guilty for inciting people,” Miskin’s defense lawyer, Kur Lual told Eye Radio.

Lual said the accusations labeled against him were political.

“He was just accused after he disagreed with the governor over issues leading to his resignation,” stated Mr.Lual.

Peter Miskin was arrested with other politicians and youths after youths clashed with regular forces in Wau over the government’s plan to relocate the county headquarter to Baggari Payam.

Mister Lual revealed that about twenty five people are still being held in Wau prison, awaiting hearing.

Two weeks ago, those being held in the prison threatened to go on a hunger strike unless their cases were heard in the court of law.
