US condemns recent Wau attacks

The United States has condemned recent violations of the ceasefire by South Sudan government and opposition forces in Wau County.

According to ceasefire monitors, the recent attacks by the SPLA destroyed a declared opposition cantonment site at Numatina in Wau County.

“These attacks followed a surge of SPLA troops and military equipment into the area,” said the US State Department, in a press statement it issued in Washington, DC on Monday.

This action, it said, is in clear violation of the permanent ceasefire provisions that apply nationwide and were agreed to by all peace agreement signatories.

The State Department also took note of what it called “credible reports” of recent attacks by the opposition and associated armed actors on government forces and civilians in the area and condemned it.

“We call on the parties to provide access for the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring Mechanism (CTSAMM) to investigate the circumstances surrounding these incidents,” the statement said.

The State Department urged all parties to resolve disputes through dialogue using the relevant mechanisms outlined in the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan.

It called on all parties to fulfill their commitments to implement the provisions of the peace agreement in full.
