Launch of non-violence booklets by SSCC in Juba. (-)
South Sudan Council of Churches (SSCC) has launched a non-violence booklet to challenge individuals and communities across the country to reject hatred and promote peace as a divine mandate.
Titled Non-Violence in South Sudan, the booklet advises citizens to reject vengeance and division – and instead embrace love, forgiveness, and dialogue as pathways to lasting peace.
Supported by PAX South Sudan, the SSCC plans to distribute the publication widely across the country, targeting communities, schools, and religious institutions.
The launch event marks the beginning of a series of workshops and awareness campaigns aimed at promoting the principles of non-violence and fostering a culture of peace.
Speaking at the launch in Juba, the Council’s Secretary-General, Reverend Tut Kong, said this initiative is a timely and crucial effort to address the challenges of violence and division in the country.
He said the church continues to play a vital role in the journey toward lasting peace and reconciliation in South Sudan.
“The booklet serves as a powerful tool to deepen our understanding of non-violence as a divine mandate and a practical way of life,” he said.
“It is a challenge to us to reject hatred, vengeance, and division instead of embrace love, forgiveness, and dialogue as a pathway to true and last in peace in South Sudan.”
Reports indicate prevalence of ethnic violence and gender based violence and human rights abuses in South Sudan – a situation believed to be exacerbated by the country’s history of political instability.
However, Rev. James Makuei Chuol, President of the Episcopal Church Council, reaffirmed the church’s commitment to peace, justice, and accompanying the nation in both local and international peace efforts.
“Until today, the church has continued to implement and update the APP and accompany the nation in various local, national, regional, and international peace processes.”
“Our work for peace has become part of our very being, part of who we are based on our faith in Jesus Christ and our gospel values. The church can never step aside from its struggle for peace and justice. And we have continued to pray and reflect on how to continue moving forward.”
