Cholera, Kala-azar kill over 10 in Fangak

Outbreaks of cholera and kala-azar have led to death of at least 10 people in Fangak State, an official has said.

This comes weeks after officials warned of possible outbreak of water-borne diseases in the state.

“Now about 10 people have died because of the cholera outbreak and most places which are being affected by this cholera are Gorwai and Jiech,” Information Minister James Lony Kang told Eye Radio.

He said the health sector is understaffed. This has made it difficult to tackle the outbreaks.

Mr Lony urged health partners to intervene.

Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.

Provision of safe water and sanitation is critical to control cholera and other waterborne diseases, according to WHO.
