Calls for Taban’s release intensify

Civil society activists have called for the release of the editor in chief of Juba monitor Alfred Taban on humanitarian grounds.

Mr Taban has been under detention for more than a week now, after writing an article critical of the presidency.

The activists say the editor has been in custody more than required by law and is also in a bad health condition.

“While the process of court may take time, release him on bail because his health is not ok. He needs to come out and then get some medical attention,” said Fareed Musa Fataki, a member of the Task Force for the Implementation of the Peace Agreement.

Many regional and international press freedom defenders and human rights groups, including Amnesty International have called for release or arraignment of Mr Taban.
