Bor businesswomen protest demolition of marketplace

Local traders went to the streets of Bor Town on Monday to protest the demolition of a booming market point at Marol Market in Jonglei State on Monday.

The women sell local vegetables, milk, fish, and other common commodities at retail prices, at the makeshift market.

The police commissioner of Jonglei State Major General Elia Costa said the traders had been given four months to relocate to another vacant place next to the market.

General Costa however said the women rejected the new place.

“The mayor allocated them to another place to take their vegetables there and start selling them. I think this morning they came out. The mayor had told them to stay there for four months and that is what they disagreed on and so they went to the mayor.”

Civil society activist Bol Deng Bol has appealed to the Bor Municipal Council to support the local market traders by meeting their demands to earn a living.

He says the locals are trying their best to take children to school and put food on the table for their families.
