Gov’t set plans to revive Nzara Agricultural Scheme
The government has reveal that it plans to revive Nzara Agricultural Scheme soon in Western Equatoria State.
Officials from the national and state governments are reportedly in the area to assess the process of rehabilitating the project.
Nzara Agricultural Complex was established in 1947 with an estimated four miles squire meters but was destroyed following subsequent wars in the country.
Alison Barnaba is the State Minister of Agriculture.
He told Eye Radio that, the team headed by the National Minister of Agriculture will evaluate and assess on the necessary technical expertise for reviving the scheme.
“Rehabilitation of this project will operate the rest of the facilities, such as the pineapple canning factory, soap and coffee, as well as sugar, as the region produces the largest sugar cane crop”, Alison Barnaba said.
Barnaba says the Mega project is expected to provide multiple job opportunities to more than 3,000 youth once resuscitated.
“If this project is restarted, it will provide the largest job opportunities for a number of South Sudanese”, Mr. Barnaba believes.
Barnaba also believes the government could privatize part of the project to generate revenue for its rehabilitation costs.
“We seek to open channels with the government with the arrival of the Minister in finding a solution to contribute to the rehabilitation of the complex by privatizing part of it.”
The Minister however, did not reveal the amount required to rehabilitate the project.
The scheme was a massive agricultural project designed to grow and process cotton, palm oil, timber and other lucrative cash crops
