Kiir directs authorities to regulate mining activities in Raad

President Salva Kiir has directed authorities in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area to regulate mining activities in Raad, a border town where gold mining has expanded in recent years.

President Kiir issued the directive on Wednesday after receiving a briefing from Greater Pibor Chief Administrator Gola Boyoi Gola on mining activities, security and recent tensions involving Murle age-set groups.

Gola suspended gold mining activities in Raad in July.

The suspension was also intended to identify companies, including Ethiopian-owned firms, operating without licenses and government authorization.

During his briefing to President Kiir, Gola said mining activities in Raad remain temporarily suspended as consultations continue on the legal and administrative framework governing the sector.

President Kiir said mining activities must be properly regulated to ensure that both the country and local communities benefit from natural resources.

He also stressed the need for greater transparency and increased government revenues from the mining sector.

The President further directed security institutions to strengthen measures aimed at maintaining peace and stability in Greater Pibor.

He urged young people in the area to promote peaceful coexistence and dialogue and to avoid actions that could escalate tensions between communities.
