Armed group frees road workers

Seven employees of the Rhino Star Construction Company who were abducted two weeks ago along the Yei-Lasu road have been released.

The Managing Director of the company, Peter Atem, had earlier told Eye Radio that 15 of the employees had been abducted while constructing Ayisa Bridge in Lasu Payam.

He said seven of them were immediately released.

But according to one of the released engineers, who only identified himself as Kenyi, they were 14.

He said among them were two Ugandan and two Kenyans nationals.

Engineer Kenyi said they were held hostage by a group of gunmen.

“When they arrested us, they tortured us but when we reached their destination, they treated us very well; we were given food once a day,” he explained.

“Surprisingly, yesterday, they told us to wash our legs and go. Our shoes and all belongings were taken. I thank God for guiding us safe.”

The fate of the other hostages is unknown.

Meanwhile, Yei River State Information Minister Stephen Ladu Onesmo condemned the act carried out by the armed men.

Ayisa Bridge connects a road to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
