A civil society activist has called on the government to pursue the fight against corruption in a sustainable and durable manner, while ensuring key institutions are properly empowered to operate independently.

His call comes after the recent arrest of senior government officials over alleged mismanagement of public funds, which he said must follow due legal process.

Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), said the country must continue demanding transparency and accountability in government operations.

“I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to His Excellency President for the country to fight corruption durably in a sustainable manner, in a continuity of demanding for transparency and accountability,” Yakani said.

“This is the moment that we should operationalize and ensure that the Anti-Corruption Commission is properly funded, equipped, protected, and empowered to pursue the fight against corruption.”

Yakani also called for the National Auditor General to regularly audit government accounts to detect irregularities early.

“This goes in line with respect and honoring, and making sure the National Auditor General audits the books of government periodically so that malpractices are spotted early before they become significant losses,” he said.

He emphasized the role of parliamentary oversight, noting that the Public Accounts Committee must be empowered to perform its duties effectively.

“These three public institutions are very important to be supported and empowered to independently perform their role in fighting corruption,” Yakani said.

The activist stressed that while corruption must be addressed firmly, legal procedures must always be respected to ensure fairness and maintain public confidence.
