Abyei: Food prices skyrocket due to bad roads

Food prices in Rum-Amer County, Abyei, have gone up in the markets due to downpour that has caused floods, the Commissioner has said.

Deng Juach says the floods have made roads impassable and affected the transportation of goods into the town.

“The movement of the trucks which are used by the traders; the trucks are not able to move up to now because there is a bad stretch in an area called Tonj,” Mr Juach told Eye Radio. “That place is blocking the movement of the trucks which carries goods.”

He says the floods have also displaced a large number of people from the area.

“The prices are getting high because some of the goods, the traders are raising their prices in the market and this is causing problems in the community.”

He urged South Sudan government and aid organizations to provide the IDPs with assistance.

“We are trying now to communicate to humanitarian office in Juba to send their delegation, especially UNISFA. We want this thing to come down to save the situation of the IDPs who have been displaced by water.”
