Medical organization Medecins Sans Frontieres says the situation in Leer County of Unity state is still volatile and needs urgent sanitary intervention.
There have been reports of destruction in Leer town as a result of fighting between government forces and forces loyal to Dr. Riek Machar over the last week.
“The situation in Leer is particularly serious, as it is in other parts of Unity, Jonglei and Upper Nile,” M-S-F head of mission in South Sudan Brian Mulla told Eye Radio.
He said access to Leer is still difficult for its staff.
“Our organization has been forced to evacuate eight times in the last month due to insecurity.”
He said M-S-F has not been able to resume operations fully in the town due to insecurity.
Mr. Mulla added MSF is in the meantime setting up an emergency response medical team in Juba.
The new County Commissioner of Leer, Stephen Taker Riek, yesterday denied claims that government forces destroyed Leer town in an offensive on Dr. Riek’s forces over the weekend.
Commissioner Taker said Leer town is calm, and both the government and the civilians have resume work.
Mr. Taker said Internally Displaced Persons in Leer need humanitarian assistance.
