Authorities in Unity State say, so far, no organization has responded to the appeal made this month to rescue people dying of hunger in Panyinjiar County.

Two weeks ago, 15 people died of lack of food in the area.

The County authorities had appealed for food aid, saying that floods destroyed most of the crops last season.

A Member of Parliament representing Panyinjiar County in the State Legislative Assembly, Simon Gatluak, told Eye Radio that neither the government nor aid organizations have responded to their appeal for food aid.

Honorable Gatluak fears that the situation could deteriorate come rainy season.

“It will be the worst in South Sudan because soon, it will start raining, and people will have no access to the area even the United Nations.”

Honorable Gatluak added that people from Panyinjiar have started migrating to other States in search of food.

“The situation is really getting bad – even most of the people from the southern part are migrating to Lakes State,” said Hon. Gatluak

Mister Gatluak said movements to and fro Panyinjiar have been disabled by bad roads and insecurity.

Panyinjiar County is home to over 50,500 people.
