Why tribal students’ associations should be banned at Varsity of Juba

The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology has directed the management of the University of Juba to abolish tribal students’ associations.

Officials say all of the public and private universities have student’s associations that are based on tribes and regions. There activities are not clear.

“You can have scientific societies, but ethnic associations and regional associations is something that I think should be in the dustbin of history,” said Professor Peter Adwok Nyaba, adding that such groupings encourage tribalism among South Sudanese.

“When we are talking about peace and reconciliation, we cannot do it while we are shouting on microphones about ethnicity and so on this is bad to happen in university setting.”
