Police in Juba have arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of Council of States lawmaker Luka Mathen, who was shot dead in Juba on Saturday night.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the motive behind the attack.
The incident occurred at about 9:00 p.m. in the Referendum Area, Gudele Block 4, where two people were shot and killed. One of the victims was Hon. Luka Mathen, who represented Cueibet County in Lakes State in the Council of States.
Confirming the incident, National Police Service spokesperson Major General James Monday Enoka told Eye Radio that the two suspects are currently in police custody.
“The two accused have been arrested. They are now under custody and the investigation is proceeding,” Gen. confirmed
Gen Enoka added that a criminal case has been opened at the Dilla Police Division and that information obtained from the suspects is expected to help identify other individuals who may have been involved in the killing.
“The case has been opened to the Delhi Police Division. We are expecting a quick report regarding the development of the case. It is through this suspect that the others who might be involved would be identified,” he added.
Major General Enoka assured the public that police will provide updates as investigations continue.
Authorities have called for calm as they work to bring all those responsible for the killing to justice.
