There are severe cases of malnutrition in Leer County, Unity state, Medicine Sans Frontiers has said.

MSF resumed operations in the area last week.

It suspended operations in Leer in January after the hospital it ran was destroyed in the fighting.

“We have resumed some activities in Leer County, particularly in Leer town,” MSF Deputy Communication Officer, Ronald Kaya told Eye Radio.

Mr Ronald said they reopened their clinic in the area to help nearly 900 children.

“From our assessment, we’ve like 880 children who are screened and we came up with a severe acute malnutrition rate of 7.8 which is high and general acute malnutrition of 44.4,” he said.

“This shows high need in terms of nutrition assistance for the population.”

Since the MSF resumed operations in the area last week, they have put about 161 children under their nutrition program.

Mr. Kaya said the population in Leer County is mostly affected by malaria, measles, diarrhea, respiratory tract infections and hunger.

He said that people who fled Leer are returning to their homes.
