7 peace delegates killed in Lafon road ambush

Seven people were killed and another is injured after armed men opened fire on the convoy of a peace delegation at Lafon County in Eastern Equatoria State, a lawmaker said.

Hon. James Angelo Ayonyang, a member of the state parliament representing Lafon, said the incident occurred on Saturday in Dorok Payam.

Angelo said the perpetrater are suspected to have come from Nacharuck area.

He said the victims are all men aged between 35 to 65 years old.

They include James Lawrence, Palmine Amugo, Lumoda Ludyok, Lobere Adlino, Lino Adiza, Orobuk Marco, and Lolia James Rimo.

The eight men including a police officer and the driver were returning from Imejejek Payam where they went to make peace between two communities – when they fell into the deadly ambush.

“When they moved to the distance of one kilometer from the school, they got a big log (of wood) on the road,” he narrated to Eye Radio.

“Then they also saw some people coming from the bush, and then they start shooting at the vehicle, killing the people. They killed four on spot and then the others who were in front was also killed, then there was other who run away and was also shot and killed.”

“The total number of people who were killed yesterday are seven, but one was wounded and managed to escape to Arilo.”

Lawmaker Angelo condemned the “unfortunate incident which we did not even expect.”

He appealed to the state authorities to identify and arrest the criminals.

“So, I call upon the government to actually identified the criminals and bring them to justice because we don’t want this to repeat itself. I also appeal to the government to take some forces to the area and cool the situation.”

The state police could not be immediately reached for comment on the incident.
