Five people were killed, and six others injured in the weekend attack on SSPDF barrack in Ajakuac of Twic County, Warrap State, a government official confirmed.

William Wol Mayom, the state Information Minister and government spokesperson alleged that the attack was carried out by armed youth from neighboring Abyei Administrative Area.

Three weeks before the incident, Abyei authorities also claimed that youth from Twic County have colluded with militias and attacked the border region – killing 14 people. The government in Kuajok also dismissed the accusations.

Meanwhile, Minister Mayom told Eye Radio on Monday that youth from Abyei launched a reprisal attack on the army barrack in the Bombil area.

As a result, five people including three women and two SSPDF soldiers were killed, and 6 others were injured.

“Last night at 2 o’clock, dated October 23, 2023, we had an incident in Twic County Payam called  Ajakuc at Bombil area, the barrack at the northern side of Ajakuc has been stormed by a group of arm youth, killing five people including three women and two men who are soldiers,” he said.

“Six others were also wounded in the incident, and the suspect are followed to be coming from the side of Abyei special administrative area.”

Attempts to contact Abyei Administrative Area Minister of Information Bol Koch were unsuccessful.

Early this year, UNISFA echoed the Security Council request to Sudan and South Sudan to ensure that the Abyei area is demilitarized from any forces, as well as armed elements of the local communities.

The UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on Monday that intercommunal violence and tensions continue to affect the ability of humanitarians to provide services in the Abyei region.
