Over 30 bodo-bodas arrested in Yei’s fuel protests

More than 30 boda-boda motor cycle riders have been arrested in Yei County, Central Equatoria State, over a strike against shortage of fuel.

Police have also confiscated more than 70 motor cycles.

The riders went on strike on Wednesday after a decision by their city council to open only one petrol station to fill government cars.

“Youth were unhappy with a decision the Mayor has taken to only reserve one functioning petrol station in Yei for only government cars and this sparked riot yesterday,” reported Eye Radio’s Memo Lasuba.

“I saw military police rounding up a group of young people mostly those who were throwing stones at office of the town Mayor of Yei yesterday.”

More than two petrol stations were destroyed in the protests. The mayor has condemned the incident.

Boda-boda taxis are the major means of transport in the border town.
