Three people were killed and a nine-month-old baby boy is nursing a bullet wound after suspected Ambororo nomads ambushed civilians in Yambio County of Western Equatoria State last week.

Yambio County Commissioner Mbiko Barakat said the victims are 35-year-old Amjuma Luka, a mother of six children, and two sisters – Nunu Daniel, 15, and Nadi aged 7 years.

The nine-month-old baby who survived the attack has been identified as Zege Gabriel.

He said the foreign armed herders ambushed a vehicle carrying civilians in Bangasu Payam, east of Yambio town.

Barakat said the Ambororo men carried out multiple attacks on the passengers traveling with a local chief on March 22, 2023.

“There was an attack on some passengers who were traveling, and another attack in Bangasu, where I went physically and four people were shot and three were dead at the spot,” he said.

“All of them were ladies from 38 years and 20-something years, and a girl of 13 years were the people who passed on. And one boy of only 9 months to one year old was also shot on his left and he is still struggling with his injuries at Makpandu clinic.”

According to Mbiko Barakat, the local youth have intervened to chase away the Ambororo nomads from the area.

The latest incident brings the total number of those killed by the nomadic pastoralists in both Yambio and Ibba to five.
