More than 2 million people have been vaccinated against Covid-19 in South Sudan since immunization began in April last year, says World Health Organization official.
Dr Brendan Dineen who is the WHO Coordinator for COVAX – the vaccine sharing initiative – says 2, 072, 520 doses have been administered since 2021.
The official also revealed that COVAX has so far delivered 3, 554, 170 doses to South Sudan since it started bringing doses to the country more than a year ago.
He was speaking at press briefing at the Public Health Emergency Operation Center on yesterday.
“The total number of persons who have been fully vaccinated is 2,072,520 doses and we have received in total 3,554,170 doses and it’s 51.5% for female and 48.5 % male.”
South Sudan began COVID-19 vaccination on April 6, 2021, nearly a year after the first case of the pandemic.
The disease has so far killed 138 people and affected 17,780 others since April 5, 2020 when the first case was reported in Juba.
The Ministry of Health still urges the public to wear mask in public faces, practice regular handwashing and take vaccine available at designated health facilities across the country.
