A newly constructed Customary Law Court was last week handed over to the authority in Yei River County after being built with funds availed by the United Nations, the commissioner has said.

The Project was funded by the UN Multi-Donor Trust Fund under the UNMISS Reconciliation, Stabilization and Resilience Program that is covering Yei, Kajokeji, Lainya, and Morobo.

Yei River County Commissioner Aggrey Cyrus Kanyikwa said the project cost 50 thousand US dollars.

He believes the C court will help difference ethnic differences and resolve land-related disputes.

Cyrus added that the court establishment is timely as refugees are coming back to the county.

“The C Court is fundamental in Yei because Yei is a multi-ethnical County. It has seven different ethnic groups,” Cyrus said. “The C Court is the best to bring all these ethnic groups into place.”

“They can practice cases that are beyond their capacity and may be a case that involves another ethnic group that cannot be solved by a Boma Court then it needs to be solved by the Customary Law County Court,

“We are privileged that this Customary Court comes at a time when we expect a lot of refugees to come back to their homes,” he said.

“Those who may have their homes occupied and the government may not reach everybody’s house,” he added. “The chiefs are there to solve those issues and disputes that arise from Land and occupation of Houses”.
