Police in Gbudwe State say it is now calm in Yambio town, where 11 people have been killed in a clash between the arrow boys and the SPLA.

Officials say the fighting started as a sporadic gunfire in one of the suburbs and spread to most of the town on Thursday.

The Acting Commissioner of Police in the state says those killed include four civilians, two prison and police officers and five arrow boys.

Brigadier Batista Kumob told Eye Radio this morning that the army has restored calm.

“The town is very calm. Markets here have reopened,” Brig Kumob told Eye Radio. “All the government offices have been opened. All the people have resumed their normal activities.”

Some civilians who fled the conflict have sought shelter at a church compound in the town.

“People were just running like animals. This is very painful when you see your own people suffering in this way,” said Peter Munde, Bishop of the ECSS diocese of Yambio.

A similar gunfire broke out in the town in December, leading to killing and displacement of some civilians.

Residents said the latest fighting started on Thursday on the outskirt of the town and spread to most of the suburbs.

Some have fled the town to Nzara for safety.
