South Sudan Women’s basketball team battle Egypt in Zone 5 of the Afrobasket Women Qualifiers Tuesday evening in their quest for a ticket in this year’s continental tournament in Rwanda.

The Women’s national team will also face Rwanda, Uganda and reigning champions Kenya in the qualification tournament to be hosted by Uganda.

The national team has already introduced a final 12-woman squad for the East Africa qualifiers tournament in Kampala from February 14-19.

Superstars Perina Leime, Acheil Tac and Israel-based Adut Bulgak will feature in the hotly contested tournament that will see only one among the five teams see the road to Kigali.

The FIBA Women’s AfroBasket is the top women’s basketball tournament in Africa which is staged every two years and features the top 12 national teams on the continent.

The 27th edition of this event will take place from July 28, 2023 to August 6, 2023 in Rwanda.

Four national teams including Nigeria, Senegal, Mali and Cameroon have already qualified automatically for the 2023 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, while Rwanda will be granted a place in the championship as host.

Meanwhile, seven others will battle it out across the continent over the next few months to advance to the biennial event.

Unlike the men’s national team, South Sudan Women performed poorly and exited earlier when they debuted in Kigali two years ago.

But team manager Deng Ajou Deng was optimistic that they could build on the gains made and capitulate on the experience of the players who have excelled individually across the world.

“Collectively, they will hopefully usher in a new era in this tournament and for women’s basketball in South Sudan,” he told FIBA.basketball.
