WFP to continue to bring food aid via Sudan

A deal allowing for passage of humanitarian cargoes through Sudan to South Sudan has been renewed for another six months.

The items are being transported by the World Food Program to help people affected by the conflict in South Sudan.

Representatives from South Sudan, Sudan and the UN agency renewed the agreement in Juba on Thursday.

The undersecretary in the ministry of humanitarian affairs, Clement Taban Dominic, signed on behalf of South Sudan and Mohamed Fadlalla Sirag-eldin, for Sudan.

Peter Schaller and Tito Nicodemus represented the World Food Program.

The government of South Sudan had requested Sudan to allow for the delivery of humanitarian cargoes from El Obeid by road to Northern Bahr el Ghazal and Unity states.

According to a joint statement, the extension will be effective from the Jan 1, 2016, after a similar deal expires in December this year.

Both governments have recommitted to provide protection to the humanitarian workers and humanitarian cargos in their respective territories.

The parties agreed to approach the donors to repair the road from Kosti, through Renk to Paloch within these six months.

According to the statement, the next joint meeting will be held in the third week of June 2016 in Addis Ababa.
