WES MPs disagree over election of new speaker

MPs in the Western Equatoria State assembly have disagreed on the election of a new speaker.

The state parliament has been headed by Deputy Speaker Anna Lorna since August, after the death of the former speaker, Bage James Elisa.

According to the law, a new speaker should be elected to fill the position within 40 to 90 days.

Hon Paul Kambua was nominated unopposed last week.

He was supposed to be sworn in on Monday, but some MPs protested the move, saying they want to nominate another candidate to compete with him for the post.

“Due to the mixed reactions of the party members, the sitting could not go on,” reported Paul Night, Eye Radio stringer.

However, acting speaker Anna Lorna said it was postponed due to the absence of the High Court Judge to swear in the new speaker.

Hon Lorna says the new speaker will be sworn into office as soon as the High Court Judge shows up in parliament.
