The government of Warrap State and the World Vision organization have distributed five hundreds of ox-plows to farmers in Kuajok and the Tonj region.

The ox-farming tools will benefit about fifty-four thousand farmers in Tonj East, Tonj South, Gogrial West, Twic, and Tonj North counties.

Speaking in the state capital, Warrap Governor Eng. Manhiem Bol said fighting hunger is a collective responsibility of every citizen and not of the Agriculture Ministry alone.

He calls on the entire citizens of the state to support the project by embracing ox-farming this rainy season.

“All of us need to support agriculture, we must become agriculturalists, we don’t have to leave this to the minister of agriculture,” he said.

“Traditionally, everybody goes to the farm, so I know we are farmers but as the officials of this state we need to be exemplary. We need to support the minister of agriculture in the agriculture projects.”

A plough or plow is a farm tool for loosening or turning the soil before sowing seed or planting.

The Ox-plough technology only requires a farmer to have a pair of oxen and a plow. With this, a farmer could cultivate a huge area within four days.

However, there have been reports that most cattle-keeping communities in South Sudan resist ox-farming thinking it is animal cruelty.

Governor Manhiem further declared Friday as a day of farming for all civil servants and government officials.

“From this month of May Friday will be exempted so that all of us take off Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, these three days can do something for us, so everybody whether you’re a minister, governor, and the rest we need to be in our farms, so this will run up to the time of harvest ”
