Vice President for the Economic Cluster Dr James Wani Igga has laid the foundation stone for the University of Yei during his visit to Yei River County.

The Tuesday ceremony was attended by government officials, religious and traditional leaders, students and members of the local community.

Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony thanked the national government for supporting the project and commended Yei River County Commissioner Samuel Henry Malimbo for allocating land for the university.

Governor Adil urged residents to maintain peace and stability, saying these are important for development and investment.

He also said the state government plans to renovate schools in Yei River County and assured residents that teachers’ salaries would be paid.

Commissioner Malimbo said the land title for the proposed university is ready.

Religious leaders welcomed the project and called for continued peace and greater investment in education.

Students and youth leaders appealed for more government support for education, scholarships, skills development and employment.

Youth Leader Gaga Frank and Paramount Chief Joseph Brown Lomose also called for the rehabilitation of the Yei-Juba road, saying better connectivity would support trade and economic activity.
