Vice President Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior is in Italy to help mobilize financial support for the World Food Programme in South Sudan.

Nyandeng who arrived Rome on Monday, is expected to present to the UN agency’s headquarters – a strategic plan on the humanitarian situation in South Sudan.

She is also expected to meet the executive board of the UN’s food agency.

The Strategic Plan sets the agency’s course for the next four years and outlines projected ways in which the agency will work to effectively save, and change lives.

Vice President Nyandeng was invited by the Acting Country-Director of the World Food Programme in South Sudan, Adeyinka Badejo, to accompany her to the organization headquarters for the presentation.

WFP has grappled with a funding challenge for more than a year – forcing it to cut food aid to refugees, and Internally Displaced Persons – as well as needy populations in disaster-prone parts of the country.

The agency took the decision in June 2022 after exhausting all efforts.

The decision stemmed from the worsening global economic crisis amid the war in Ukraine, which leaves humanitarian agencies in Africa to work with funding shortfalls.

WFP said at the time, that it urgently needed 426 million dollars to cover humanitarian needs for six months.
