U.S. development agency (USAID) Mission Director for South Sudan David Thompson arrived in the country after the seasoned humanitarian official assumed the position on 1st October.
The arrival of Mr. Thompson was announced by U.S. Ambassador to South Sudan Michael J. Adler in a press statement on Monday.
Thompson’s 30-year career has spanned development and assistance programs in Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Western Hemisphere – having held significant positions with USAID since joining the agency’s foreign service in 2003.
Before his appointment to the South Sudan mission, the diplomat was serving as Power Africa Deputy Coordinator based in South Africa from 2020 to 2024.
USAID is the largest donor of humanitarian aid to South Sudan, supporting a range of sectors including food security, health, education, and activities supporting democracy and good governance.
The U.S. government has so far contributed a total of $640 million for U.S. humanitarian assistance in South Sudan, including for Sudanese people living in the country during the same period.
