A United States diplomatic convoy was attacked in the Sudanese capital Khartoum amid the urban battle between the army and paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces, according to media reports.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said the convoy of clearly marked embassy vehicles was attacked on Monday, and that preliminary reports link the assailants to the Rapid Support Forces, the paramilitary group battling Sudan’s military.

Washington’s top diplomat further confirmed that everyone in the convoy was safe.

Blinken has described the attack as “reckless” during a press conference at G7 foreign ministers meeting in Japan.

“This action was reckless, it was irresponsible and of course unsafe,” he told reporters according to the BBC.

“We have deep concerns about the overall security environment,” he added.

The attack occurred as Blinken spoke to the head of the army Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF head Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo and stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of diplomatic personnel and aid workers.

The European Union’s ambassador to Sudan was also attacked in his home in Khartoum on Monday, the bloc’s top diplomat Josep Borrell said in a tweet.

Battles have taken place throughout the vast country and there are fears of regional spillover.

Terrified residents of the capital are spending the last and holiest days of Ramadan watching from their windows as tanks roll through the streets, buildings shake and smoke from fires triggered by the fighting hangs in the air.

Around 185 people have been killed and more than 1,800 injured in three days of fighting in Sudan, according to the UN.
