NEW YORK, USA (Eye Radio) — The United Nations Security Council will convene behind closed doors this evening to address the deepening political and security crisis in South Sudan, according to a media post on the Security Council’s website.
The consultations, requested by the United States, come amid growing international alarm over the government’s stance toward the UN Mission (UNMISS) and the systematic dismantling of the 2018 peace agreement.
Under-Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix is expected to brief the Council on a series of destabilizing developments. Key among these is the December 17 decision by President Salva Kiir to unilaterally amend the Revitalized Peace Agreement (R-ARCSS), effectively decoupling the upcoming 2026 elections from the completion of a permanent constitution—a move critics label a “betrayal of the peace process.”
The Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) recently warned that the “collapse of core provisions” has led to a significant surge in violence.
In the Equatorias and Jonglei, renewed clashes between the SSPDF and SPLM-IO have displaced thousands, while the “Troika” (Norway, UK, and USA) recently condemned the government for prioritizing “power-sharing over the welfare of citizens.”
As UNMISS faces potential resource exhaustion by March due to financial constraints and government-imposed obstructions, tomorrow’s briefing will be a critical bellwether for international intervention in 2026
