The UN Mission in South Sudan says displaced people are seeking protection from the ongoing crisis in UNMISS camps, because they feel it is the safest place.

On Friday, the Minister of Information, also the government Spokesperson, Michael Makuei, accused the UN Mission in South Sudan, of denying allegations that civilians are dying in UNMISS camps in Juba.

He said the allegations were presented to parliament by Dr. Riek Gai, the National Minister of Health.

“Acted is an NGO which signed a contract with UNMISS …and based on that contract Acted came and signed a contract with Juba teaching hospital. The objective was to provide treatment and bury the dead and avail the necessary legal document for the dead before they are buried. This was done and an agreement was signed, a memorandum of understanding was signed. And based on that, UNMISS started to transport the death people.” He told reporters, after the Council of Ministers meeting.

“Those who died in UNMISS at Tong Ping and the other on at Jebel; they continue to transport them to the hospital. And …their death certificates are processed in the hospital so that they are legalized. And there after these bodies are given decent burial. This is what the hospital authorities have been doing all this time.”

Meanwhile, the UN Mission in South Sudan says it does not refute the claims.

“A, we are not refuting that people are dying. B, People are coming to our compounds, because they feel they will be protected, and they feel that their lives will be protected and saved by being in UNMISS compounds”, UNMISS Spokesperson, Arien Quentier, said

She told Eye Radio, the main of the mission is to provide protection, to the people seeking refuge at their sites around the country.
