UNMISS relocates IDPs in Bentiu

The UN Mission in the country says it is relocating the Internally Displaced Persons in flooded areas of its camp in Bentiu to higher grounds.

There are more than 70, 000 civilians who have sought shelter at the camp. They are fleeing fighting between the government and the SPLM in Opposition forces.

UNMISS spokesperson, Arianne Quentier, told Eye Radio that the relocation will reduce the spread of waterborne diseases.

She said: “We had people who are settled in areas which were prone to flooding, with a lot of stagnant waters, which means that these are very precarious and terrible conditions, but in addition to that, it’s a real public health problem, with water-borne diseases, with cholera, that can breakout, and with very bad malaria. We’ve been working in making higher grounds, improving the drainage, improving the sanitation,”

Arianne says the camp is still receiving more people fleeing violence in the area but there is a UNMISS protection team in place receiving them.
