Unity State readies machinery for cleaning rivers

The government of Unity State on Sunday inspected the readiness of the equipment and machines to be used for clearing the Naam – Bahr el ghazal rivers and Lake No.

The machinery including river barges and bull dozers were delivered by the National Ministry of Water and Irrigation on the weekend.

David Gai Jiejor, the Minister of Information said the new equipment and machines will start the clearing of the river pathways at the end of this month.

“As per-now, the leadership of Unity state has inspected the types of equipment which are on the ground in Unity state to make sure that at the end of this month, we will able to start,” he said.

Gai says Governor Joseph Manytuil inspected the machines that are currently stationed at Yoahnyang River Bank.

“As for now we are in preparations to make sure that all the equipment is in place, some of this equipment is still in Juba as soon as we are working on the road between Unity state headquarters and Mayom then at the end of the month we are going to transfer the other equipment from Juba to the state.”

The development comes four months after the unity government resolved that the Nile be cleared of water weeds as opposed to dredging.

The change of term used for the process followed a public cry after the National Ministry of Water Resource and Irrigation had imported four river cleaning machines known as barges from Egypt to clean pathways of the Nile River.

The machines were designed to remove materials such as sand, soil in rivers, and water weeds.

This was intended to increase the flow of water downstream to reduce flooding affecting Unity state.
