Unity State government has announced the demolition of 32 illegal checkpoints in the state with only three left in operation for security purpose, in implementation of the 8th Governors Forum resolution.
Governor Justice Riek Bim Top said this decision is part of efforts to ease movement of goods and services, enhance accessibility and eliminate unlawful taxation.
Mr. Bim – speaking to state-owned SSBC television – pointed out that the directive aligns with leadership instructions from Juba and urged state administrators, organized forces, and national security personnel to adhere strictly to the new measures.
The closure of Unity State checkpoints follows similar actions by other states to eliminate the barriers, which have contributed to inflated market prices and disrupted humanitarian activities.
The humanitarian sector has frequently criticized the presence of these checkpoints for impeding their operations.
“The government of the Unity State has decided to implement the directive of our leadership in Juba by stopping the taxation in number of the checkpoints within Unity State,” he said on SSBC.
“There has been many checkpoints around almost 32 checkpoints along the road up to Rubkona. We decided that we shall only leave three checkpoints in this area.”
“These are the directives of our leadership to inform all our partners, the humanitarian, the business community. The road is open as from today. All the administrators, the command of the organized forces, the national security must implement these directives.”
On his part, Rubkona County Commissioner James Clement said they will ensure that the roadblocks are permanently removed from those areas.
“I would like to reassure the public that we in the county will monitor the removal order that was implemented for illegal checkpoints in the area with the security authorities so that no one returns and places the checkpoints again.”
