A team of commissioners from the UN Human Rights Commission is in the country to assess the human rights situation in the country.

This is the second field visit of the team to the country this year since its appointment in June, by the President of the Human Rights Council, Ambassador Choi Kyonglim.

In a statement, UNMISS says the team has been in the country for the last 10 days.

“It] met Government officials including key ministers, members of civil society, religious leaders, diplomats and UN agencies to discuss the current human rights situation in the country,” partly read the statement issued Tuesday.

UNMISS says they have also visited UN compounds across the country, where internally displaced people are housed, community leaders and civil society organizations.

It says the commissioners will travel to Ethiopia and Kenya, where they will engage with African Union leaders, the IGAD, senior UN officials, as well as other members of the international community and civil society.

They include Ms. Yasmin Sooka from South Africa, Mr. Kenneth Scott from USA, and Mr. Godfrey Musila from Kenya.

The commissioners are also mandated to advise the Transitional Government of National Unity on transitional justice and accountability.

The Commission will present its report to the Human Rights Council in March 2017.
