The UN Undersecretary-General for Peace Operations has praised efforts by the peace parties in implementing the revitalized peace agreement.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix has expressed optimism that a durable solution to the challenges of South Sudan will come from a successful political process, saying the solution is a political one.

Lacroix who came to the country in the company of the UN Chief de Cabinet Executive of Secretary-General Earle Courtenay Rattery made the remarks at the end of his four-day visit to the country yesterday

During their visit, they visited Bor town of Jonglei State to gauge the impact of climate change and the UN’s efforts to build resilience and confidence among the South Sudanese communities

They also engaged with women and civil society organizations before meeting top politicians in Juba to hear their views as South Sudan prepares for elections in 2024.

The visiting top UN officials listened to humanitarian partners and the donor communities in the country.

“What we all aspire to, is the stabilization of the situation in this country, followed by sustainable and enduring peace”, Chef de Cabinet Rattray said.

Their visit comes in the wake of the recent agreement by all signatories to the peace roadmap to push forward the outstanding benchmarks contained within the 2018 peace agreement.

This is as South Sudan still struggles to deliver the peace, recovery, and development it promised its citizens, after the devastation wrought by repeated civil wars.
