The United Kingdom Ambassador to South Sudan has raised concern over the worsening security and humanitarian situation in Jonglei State, calling for renewed dialogue and stronger protection of civilians.

The remarks come amid escalating fighting between government and opposition forces in parts of the country, particularly in northern Jonglei State.

Speaking after a meeting with the Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Chol Thon Balok yesterday, UK Ambassador David Ashley described the situation in Jonglei as very worrying and stressed the urgent need to prevent further violence and civilian suffering.

According to a statement from the UK mission, discussions focused on reviving dialogue as the only sustainable path to peace, especially in areas affected by recurring conflict and intercommunal violence.

The ambassador urged authorities to prioritize political and community-based engagement to ease tensions and restore stability.

Ambassador Ashley also called for clear and firm orders to all armed forces to respect international humanitarian law, with particular emphasis on the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.

“Ambassador Ashley met with Minister of Defence, Lt Gen Chol Thon Balok, and discussed the very worrying situation in Jonglei. Ambassador Ashley urged renewed dialogue for peace, clear orders to respect international humanitarian law, protect civilians & prevent child recruitment and reopened humanitarian access,” read the statement issued by the embassy on Thursday.

The United Kingdom, alongside the United States of America, Troika member countries, and other international partners, continues to urge all parties to uphold international law, protect civilians, and recommit to dialogue as the foundation for lasting peace.
