Ugandan census suspended in disputed border area

Authorities in Kajo-Keji County of Central Equatoria State say they have suspended Ugandan census, which has been taking place illegally in Sunyu area at Kangapo One.

The people from Kangapo One speak Kuku language, which is the main language in Kajo Keji.

A delegation from Uganda was in Kajo Keji yesterday to resolve the issue.

The County spokesperson, Baden Elikana Kenyi, says the land within the border with Uganda is a disputed area in which both sides claim the ownership.

“The team from Uganda just crossed into that land and they started counting the population, which was under South Sudan, claiming that the land belongs to Uganda and they wanted to own the people from that particular area,” Mr Baden told Eye Radio.

“That caused conflict actually within that area, where the authorities from Kajo Keji suspended them from carrying out their activities,” he said.

Mr. Baden said the two sides are demanding for the immediate demarcation of the land before counting the population in the area.

On Thursday the government of Uganda launched the country’s third national population and housing census.
Uganda last conducted a population and housing census in September 2002.
