Deputy chief mediator of the Tumaini Initiative said parties have made significant progress during a 10-hour discussion on Tuesday that ended with them reaching consensus on the agenda items to be discussed in the negotiation.
This followed a deadlock triggered by divergent positions on whether the initiative should produce a standalone agreement or an annex to the existing peace accord.
An extensive discussion on Tuesday saw the government and opposition delegation agree on four agenda items proposed by the Kenya mediation team led by Retired General Lazarus Sumbeiywo.
These include; clarity of the United People’s Alliance (UPA) rebranding its name from the South Sudan Opposition Movement Alliance, root cause of the conflict in the country, relationship between 2018 revitalized peace agreement and Tumaini, and responsibility sharing.
Speaking to the media in Nairobi, Deputy Chief Mediator Dr. Mohamed Guyo commended the parties, adding that the process is progressing well.
“The government, the opposition and the stakeholders made significant progress, this clearly shows good day for mediation. The parties agreed to all the agenda items that we proposed,” he said.
“In fact, the mediation took the opportunity to commend and to congratulate the parties and the stakeholders for reaching this milestone.”
According to Dr. Mohamed, the parties will continue with the first agenda item this morning, which is the rebranding of SSOMA to UPA.
