A youth representative to the Kenya-led South Sudan peace process said the Tumaini Initiative should promote the implementation of youth enterprise development fund to empower young people.

Patrick Godi – a member of South Sudan Civil Society Forum – underscored that the fund was enshrined in the 2018 revitalized peace agreement, but has not been implemented.

He added that the Tumaini consensus should reinvigorate the youth support fund to enhance their socio-economic empowerment.

Mr. Godi said the initiative will encourage young people to participate effectively in rebuilding the economy of the country.

“It is important that youth interests are not left out under the Tumaini, and we have emphasized previous provisions from the R-ARCSS which talked about empowering young people to economically participate in rebuilding the economy,” he said.

“That has not been implemented since 2018, we are reechoing it here in Tumaini that this time around it must be implemented.”

“We also said that young people have largely been left behind from the governance of the country. They have to be included across parliament, across other institutions to ensure that their voices are always carried there.”

Young people in South Sudan, make up an estimated 72% of the population, but face numerous challenges that limit their access to education and livelihoods opportunities.

Unemployment is said to be one of the biggest social problems facing young people in the country, as the demographic accounts for only 12 percent of the workforce.

This presents numerous challenges such as reduction in the absorption of young people in the labor market and retardation of the country’s economic growth.
