Donald Trump has won elections to become the next President of the United States, beating his rival Hillary Clinton.

The Republican nominee’s victory came after winning votes from key swing states of Florida, Ohio and North Carolina, despite months of polling that favored Mrs Clinton.

Mr Trump won 28 US states, beating Mrs Clinton in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Those states had not supported a Republican presidential candidate since 1988 and 1984 respectively.

Mr Trump, who is regarded a populist billionaire, provoked controversy on the campaign trail for comments about women, Muslims and a plan to build a wall along the US-Mexican border.

In report by ABC, nearly nine in 10 black voters and two-thirds of Latinos voted for the Democrat, but more than half of white voters backed the Republican.

However, during a victory speech shortly after the tallying results, Trump pledged he would work with Americans of all walks of life regardless of their backgrounds and affiliations.

He also expressed readiness to work with countries that are willing to cooperate with America.

“I want to tell the world community while we put America’s interests first, we will deal fairly with everyone, all people,” Mr Trump stated.

“We will seek common ground, not hostility-partnership, not conflict; we will double out growth and have the strongest economy anywhere in the world.

“At the same time, we will get along with all of the nations willing to get along with us. We have great relationship; we expect to have great relationship.”

Mr. Trump also said he would work for peace in the world saying countries need to build relationships that promote development.
