Troika, EU end support for SPLM-IO team accommodation

Author : | Published: Thursday, January 21, 2016

The Troika and EU countries say their sponsorship of hotel accommodation in Juba for the advance team of the SPLM in Opposition will end tomorrow.

They say they agreed on the deadline during a dialogue with both the government and the SPLM in the opposition before its advance team came to Juba.

The Troika countries include United States, Norway, UK, and EU countries.

They are sponsoring more than 200 members of the SPLM in opposition in five hotels in Juba since last month. They are in Juba for the implementation of the peace agreement.

In a statement, the Troika countries say the assistance was to ensure the full operationalization of the several committees agreed upon in the peace agreement, among other reasons.

“This joint support was an exceptional, one-time program of assistance. As stated very clearly in our dialogue with both the government… and the SPLM-IO, the assistance will terminate 22 January, the date by which the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU) is scheduled to be formed,” it said in a statement.

“This means that support for all those now being provided accommodation in Juba will end on that date. It does not mean that our support to the peace process will end.

“It’s an opportunity for the parties to demonstrate their commitment and find a solution that allows implementation to continue.”
