The Director General of Traffic Police says the National Parliament is “illegitimate and unregistered” to make decisions on matters related to his institution two months after the August House imposed a permanent logbook policy.

Major General Kon John Akot stated that the legislature is overstepping its boundaries by resolving to modify the expiration dates of logbooks.

This comes after the House, in August 2023, included in the fiscal budget a lifetime renewal of logbooks and passed the resolution.

General Kon expressed his concerns about what he perceived as interference by lawmakers in a day-to-day operations and decision-making of the traffic police force.

During an interview with an online media outlet, Gen. Kun said the parliament lacks the necessary authority and expertise to make decisions pertaining to traffic matters.

He further described the Reconstituted Transitional National Legislative Assembly as illegal and lacking legitimacy.

“Lawmakers are interfering on the Traffic Police affairs and they are not technical people and they don’t know anything about it, they said logbooks shouldn’t be renewed, logbook is subject to renewal,” Kon said.

“When you bring a car for renewal, we first inspect and check the car and we issue insurance, and we do a lot of things before logbook renewal and there is money being collected by revenue authority of the country.”

“Now parliament is interfering with our work, and this is an illegitimate and unregistered parliament that has no right to interfere in state legislations, and they come and say that the logbook should not be renewed,” said furious Kon.

“It would be better for them to come and work in traffic so that they know the fatigue that exists in the traffic department.”
